It's for charity...

I decided that it would be a nice idea if I set up a Just Giving page for the Run Balmoral 5k I am doing at the end of this month. It's only a little run, but it's my first one and I plan to build up from the 5k and run a 10k later in the year and hopefully a half marathon after that - the Glasgow half in September would be good but I need to see how the 5k goes before I go for that!

I've never really been much of a runner, I used every trick I could think of to avoid PE classes in school, especially when it was cross country running. When I started university I kind of flirted with the idea of running on and off but never made it past going out once or twice. It was just such a painful experience! Everything ached, my ankles, my knees, my shins, my lungs, my throat... I could barely make it to the end of the path let alone street!

Two years ago I started putting a bit more effort into it, pushed past the pain and made it a few weeks into a "couch to 5k" style program of walking for a minute/running for a minute for 20 minutes. After the first week I had progressed loads but still hadn't really developed much interest in running other than the vague idea of wanting to lose weight, so I gave up. I started again last year when I was seeing the personal trainer, weights sessions would end with a 10 minute intervals session on the treadmill - it felt awful every time, but as soon as I was done it felt amazing! I really started to notice improvements and started to really enjoy it. But I moved gyms so could no longer use a PT and the running became more and more infrequent and I've never really managed to progress much further than the run for a minute/walk for a minute method.

It was after a few more runs with my boyfriend and one with JAG and both of them commented on my speed, I realised I was progressing, I was just going faster meaning I couldn't mange a better distance. Now that I have been trying really hard to slow down I have managed to cover 5k a couple of times, though not quite at the running the full distance stage I am hopeful for the end of the month! I am running 3 times a week during my lunch break at work and will have to start adding in a longer run at the weekend with my boyfriend too.

Anyway - I really hope I can do this and I have set up a Just Giving page for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland if anyone would like to sponsor me to do this run I would greatly appreciate it :)

Thank you so much to all the kind people who have donated so far - you're all wonderful!

  3. I've set up a reminder to donate later, I'm mega skint at the moment! It's no fun being jobless! Don't be nervous about it, I've no doubt you can do it!

By the way, I'm holding a core challenge competition on my blog? Would love to have you involved if it's something you're interested in! Should be good for your running too :)
